How to stay safe in a breakdown
Nobody wants to have their car or van breakdown, it’s not really something you can plan for. But there are some important things you can do to keep yourself and passengers safe if the worst should happen. Of course you are the person best placed to decide what to do, however here are some suggestions to help keep you safe….
Prevention is better than cure
Keep your car or van regularly serviced. Make sure you carry out routine weekly maintenance checks yourself as recommended in the manufacturers handbook. i.e oil, water, tyre pressures etc, all simple things that could prevent anxiety about a breakdown.
Warning lights are there for a reason
Should you notice a warning light appear on your dashboard whilst driving then pull over in a safe place and consult the vehicles handbook. Don’t keep driving and hoping for the best, not only could it be dangerous to continue, you could cause severe and expensive damage to your vehicle.
If you hear, see or smell something unusual or feel strange vibrations then slow down and pull over safely to investigate the problem. Again don’t keep driving, you could cause more problems for yourself.
If you have to stop find somewhere safe, a lay-by, or if you have too the hard shoulder. If you can’t get off the carriageway then pull over to the left as far as possible and use your hazard warning lights. If it is safe to do so deploy your red hazard warning triangle behind your vehicle.
Exit stage left
Exit from the passengers side, and make sure all passengers do as well. If possible get well away from the vehicle and stay away until help arrives. Of course at night you may feel more secure locked in your vehicle, that is a call you will have to make depending on conditions. You can always leave the passenger door unlocked if you feel unsafe or threatened so you can get back in quickly.
Call for help
Once you and your vehicle are safe call for assistance from a breakdown provider. If you can’t make your vehicle safe or have nowhere safe to wait or don’t have a membership to any providers then call the police and they may arrange recovery or assistance for you.
